Today let’s have a look at the Google Allo, a super smart Chat App from Google. WhatsApp, the quintessential chat app, which rules with more than 1 billion active users obviously may seem like a tough shell to crack . But, when a company like Google announces something like this it’s something we should all have a look at. Well, I did my homework on Google Allo and landed up with some impressive findings and some, of course, not that great. Truth to be told, I am kind of bored with the WhatsApp especially the interface and typography.

Google Allo Features

Google Allo is a messaging application designed for both iOS and Android devices. The app will be linked to your phone number and you can chat with anyone in your contact list. This is quite hassle free and so far proven easier by WhatsApp. The interface and typography is based on the Material Design, which my favorite part. The main features of Allo are;

Google Assistant, Allo

Google Assistant is more like a chatbot from Google with a conversational interface. You can ask Google pretty much anything that you use to type into the conventional search box. All you have to do is initiate a conversation with the @Google and rest is taken care. Imagine you and your girlfriend/boyfriend is chatting about having dinner outside and you guys are looking for italian restaurants. In this case you can just type “@Google Italian restaurants nearby” and it will show you the results inside the chat. You can even a book a table at the places listed. You can try more queries like this and the results will be displayed inside the chat area itself.

Smart Reply, Allo

Smart Reply, Allo

Smart Reply, is one of my favorite. You can use this feature to instantly reply to chats without even typing. Imagine your friend send you a picture of cupcake he/she is having and the Google bots will automatically identify the content of the picture and will come up with smart replies. This feature will work for chat conversations too. This feature comes handy in situations like “Can we go for movie tonight?” replies like “I’m IN” “Busy tonight” “Maybe tomorrow”. The google even look at your calendars before it come up with smart replies.

Ink in Google Allo

Ink in Google Allo

Ink, Now you can send an image over chat and Allo will allow you to write something over the images and doodle with it. This is really great especially when you want to convey something right out of the images you send across.

Shout and Whisper, Allo

Shout and Whisper, Allo

Shout and Whisper, show off your emotions through chats. Before you hit the send button you can drag your fingers up and down which increase and decrease the font size. Next time if you excited/angry about something you can send the chat in big letters and if you want something to be kept as a secret you can send it in small fonts. Obviously this is called ‘shout’ and ‘whisper’.

Chat Stickers, Allo

Chat Stickers, Allo

Exclusive Stickers, you will get tonnes of new stickers to send across the chats. Whether you want to convey something in a better understanding way or if you want to make your chats little naughty with double meaning these stickers will come handy.

Incognito Mode, Allo

Incognito Mode, Allo

Incognito Mode, you got it right incognito is same as the one you see in the chrome browser. Now you can do private chats which is 100% secure with end to end encryption, chats expiring after certain time and even comes with private notifications.

Now, the negatives. There is no information about sending voice chats and making calls over the allo. Chats other than ‘incognito mode’ are not encrypted compromising on the security of chat contents. Google has announced another app ‘Duo’ which basically do the same thing Facetime and Skype does. The big question here is, of course, why can’t Google incorporate the features of Duo inside Allo and make it a single app instead of splitting them up. With Google Allo joining the pack we will be seeing a great battle for the market share in the coming few months.
